Tour Revisits Program from 49 Years Ago

March 8, 2020 //  by New York Sports Tours // Leave a Comment

The championship boxing match known as The Fight of the Century, staged 49 years ago today at New York’s Madison Square Garden between undefeated heavyweights Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, is among the stories presented on this month’s New York Sports Tours outings. As part of the fight story, guests hold an original program from the historic March 8, 1971, bout.

As noted in this Good Day New York segment on Fox5 New York with New York Sports Tours founder Jordan Sprechman, the program includes notable cover art and an interesting undercard. Inside the program, guests see many rare photos, plus an advertisement for Keens Steakhouse (then known as Keen’s Chop House), the 1885 restaurant that is the site of many of the New York Sports Tours’ post-tour dinners where tour guests enjoy dinner with New York sports personalities.

Frazier won the 1971 match with a unanimous 15-round decision. Two years later, Ali defeated Frazier in a Madison Square Garden rematch.
